கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க அதற்குத் தக.

Learn well what should be learnt, and then
Live your learning.
Meaning:
Let a man learn thoroughly whatever he may learn, and let his conduct be worthy of his learning.
குறள் 392
எண்ணென்ப ஏனை எழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டும்
கண்ணென்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு.
Stanza 392
Those called figures and letters the wise declare,
Are eyes to live with?
Meaning:
Letters and the numbers are the two eyes of man.
குறள் 133
ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை குடிமை இழுக்கம்
இழிந்த பிறப்பாய் விடும்.

Caste is right conduct: and its lack
Makes one an outcaste.

மறப்பினும் ஓத்துக் கொளலாகும் பார்ப்பான்
பிறப்பொழுக்கங் குன்றக் கெடும்.

Debases a Brahmin at once.

அழுக்கா றுடையான்கண் ஆக்கம்போன்று இல்லை
ஒழுக்க மிலான்கண் உயர்வு.

The immortal can no more earn respect
Than the envious be rich.

கண்ணுடையர் என்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் கல்லா தவர்.

Only the learned have eyes – others
Two sores on their face!
Meaning:
It is the part of the learned to give joy to those whom they meet, and on leaving, to make them think, “Oh, when shall we meet them again!”

ஒழுக்கத்தின் ஒல்கார் உரவோர் இழுக்கத்தின்
ஏதம் படுபாக் கறிந்து.

The strong willed never slack in virtue; they know
What evils flow from a lapse?

உவப்பத் தலைக்கூடி உள்ளப் பிரிதல்
அனைத்தே புலவர் தொழில்.

It is pleasure to meet a scholar,
A pain to part with him.
Meaning:
They unlearned are inferior to the learned, before whom they stand begging, as the destitute before the wealthy.
குறள் 137
ஒழுக்கத்தின் எய்துவர் மேன்மை இழுக்கத்தின்
எய்துவர் எய்தாப் பழி.
Stanza 137
Right conduct exalts one, while a bad name
Expose one to undeserved disgrace.
குறள் 138
நன்றிக்கு வித்தாகும் நல்லொழுக்கம் தீயொழுக்கம்
என்றும் இடும்பை தரும்.
Stanza 138
Good conduct sows good, and from a bad springs
Eternal trouble.
