Kural 441

குறள் 441
அறனறிந்து மூத்த அறிவுடையார் கேண்மை
திறனறிந்து தேர்ந்து கொளல்.

Stanza 441
Value and secure the friendship
Of the virtues, mature and wise.

Meaning:
Let a king ponder well its value, and secure the friendship of men of virtue and of mature knowledge.

Transliteration
Aranarindhu Mooththa Arivutaiyaar Kenmai
Thiranarindhu Therndhu Kolal.

 

Kural 442

குறள் 442
உற்றநோய் நீக்கி உறாஅமை முற்காக்கும்
பெற்றியார்ப் பேணிக் கொளல்.

Stanza 442
Seek them who can remove present ills
And prevent those to come.

Meaning:
Let ( a kind) procure and kindly care for the men who can overcome the difficulties when they occur, and guard again then before they happen.

Transliteration
Utranoi Neekki Uraaamai Murkaakkum
Petriyaarp Penik Kolal.

 

Kural 443

குறள் 443
அரியவற்று ளெல்லாம் அரிதே பெரியாரைப்
பேணித் தமராக் கொளல்.

Stanza 443
The rarest of rare things is to seek and secure
The friendship of the great.

Meaning:
To cherish great men and make them his own, is the most difficult of all difficult things.

Kural 444

குறள் 444
தம்மிற் பெரியார் தமரா ஒழுகுதல்
வன்மையு ளெல்லாந் தலை.

Stanza 444
The greater strength is kinship
With one greater.

Meaning:
So to act as to make those men, His own, who are greater than himself, is of all power the highest.

Transliteration
Thammir Periyaar Thamaraa Ozhukudhal
Vanmaiyu Lellaan Thalai.

 

Kural 445

குறள் 445
சூழ்வார்கண் ணாக ஒழுகலான் மன்னவன்
சூழ்வாரைக் சூழ்ந்து கொளல்.

Stanza 445
A king’s ministers are his eyes
To be chosen with care.

Meaning:
As the king must use his ministers as eyes (in managing his kingdom), let him well examine their character and qualifications before he engages them.

Transliteration
Soozhvaarkan Naaka Ozhukalaan Mannavan
Soozhvaaraik Soozhndhu Kolal.

 

Kural 446

குறள் 446
தக்கா ரினத்தனாய்த் தானொழுக வல்லானைச்
செற்றார் செயக்கிடந்த தில்.

Stanza 446
No foe can do anything to one
Who has fit counsel and acts right.

Meaning:
There will be nothing left for enemies to do, against him who has poer of acting (so as to secure) fellowship of worthy men.

Transliteration
Thakkaa Rinaththanaaith Thaanozhuka Vallaanaich
Chetraar Seyakkitandha Thil.

 

Kural 447

குறள் 447
இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வரை யாரே
கெடுக்குந் தகைமை யவர்.

Stanza 447
Who can injure a king who employs
Men who can rebuke him roundly?

Meaning:
Who are great enough to destroy him who rules over servents that (have power to) rebuke him?

Transliteration
Itikkun Thunaiyaarai Yaalvarai Yaare
Ketukkun Thakaimai Yavar.

 

Kural 448

குறள் 448
இடிப்பாரை இல்லாத ஏமரா மன்னன்
கெடுப்பா ரிலானுங் கெடும்.

Stanza 448
A upguarded by trenchant counsel
Needs no foes to come to grief.

Meaning:
The king, who is without the guard of men who can rebuke him, will perish, eventhough there be no one to destroy him.

Transliteration
Itippaarai Illaadha Emaraa Mannan
Ketuppaa Rilaanung Ketum.

 

Kural 449

குறள் 449
முதலிலார்க ஊதிய மில்லை மதலையாஞ்
சார்பிலார்க் கில்லை நிலை.

Stanza 449
There can be no capital without capital,
And no stability unpropped by wise counsel.

Meaning:
There can be no gain to those who have no capital; and there can be no permanence to those who are without the support of adherents.

Transliteration
Mudhalilaarkku Oodhiya Millai Madhalaiyaanjjch
Aarpilaark Killai Nilai.

 

Kural 450

குறள் 450
பல்லார் பகை கொளலிற் பத்தடுத்த தீமைத்தே
நல்லார் தொடர்கை விடல்.

Stanza 450
Foregoing good counsel is tenfold worse
Than facing an army alone.

Meaning:
It is tenfold more injurious to abandon the, friendship of the good, than to incur the hatred of the many.

Transliteration
