To address an assembly ill-equipped
Is to plat at dice without a board.
Meaning:
To speak in an assembly (of the learned) without fullness of knowledge, is like playing at chess (on a board) withot squares.

நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும் மாந்தர்க்கு

Stanza 452
The soil colours water, and one’s company
One’s mind.
Meaning:
As water changes (its nature) from the nature of the soil (in which it flows), so will the character of men resemble the character of their associates.

கல்லாதான் சொற்கா முறுதல் முலையிரண்டும்

As well might a child flat-chested pass for a woman
As one unlearned for an orator.
Meaning:
The desire of unlearned to speak (in an assembly) is like a woman without breasts deiring (the enjoyment of) Womanhood.

மனத்தானாம் மாந்தர்க் குணர்ச்சி இனத்தானாம்
இன்னான் எனப்படுஞ் சொல்.

Perceptions spring from nature,
Character from company.
Meaning:
The power of knowing is from the mind; but from a man’s associates will be determined what sort of man he is.

The unlearned also are excellent men, if they know how to keep silence before the learned.

The learned will not acknowledge
An ignoramus’ occasional knowledge.
Meaning:
Although the natural knowledge of an unlearned man may be very good, the wise will not attend to it.

மனத்து ளதுபோலக் காட்டி ஒருவற்கு

Wisdom which seems to comes from the mind
Comes really from one’s company.
Meaning:
The knowledge of a man, while it appears to be from his mind is really from its associates.
