நல்லாறு எனப்படுவது யாதெனின் யாதொன்றும்
கொல்லாமை சூழும் நெறி.
Stanza:
Right conduct may be defined
As the creed of not killing.
Meaning:
Is it asked, what is the good way? it is the path which considers how it may avoid killing any creatures.
குறள் 325
நிலைஅஞ்சி நீத்தாருள் எல்லாம் கொலைஅஞ்சிக்
கொல்லாமை சூழ்வான் தலை.
Stanza 325
Ascetics fear rebirth and renounce the world
How much better to fear murder and renounce killing.
Meaning:
Of all those who, fearing the performance (of earthly births), have abonded desire, he is the chief who, fearing (the guilt of) murder, considers how he may avoid the destruction of life.
குறள் 318
தன்னுயிர்ககு ஏன்னாமை தானறிவான் என்கொலோ
மன்னுயிர்க்கு இன்னா செயல்.
Stanza 318
Why does one hurt others
Knowing what it is to be hurt?
Meaning:
Why does a man inflict upon others those sufferings, which he found by experience are sufferings to himself?
குறள் 326
கொல்லாமை மேற்கொண் டொழுகுவான் வாழ்நாள்மேல்
செல்லாது உயிருண்ணுங் கூற்று.
Stanza:
Death that eats up all shall not prevail
Against the non-killer.
Meaning:
Yama, the destroyer of life, will not attack the life time of him, who acts under the determination never to destroy life.
குறள் 327
தன்னுயிர் நீப்பினும் செய்யற்க தான்பிறிது
இன்னுயிர் நீக்கும் வினை.
Stanza 327
Even at the cost of one’s own life
One should avoid killing.
Meaning:
Let no one do that which would destroy the life of another although he should lose his own life.
குறள் 319
பிறர்க்கின்னா முற்பகல் செய்யின் தமக்கு இன்னா
பிற்பகல் தாமே வரும்.
Stanza 319
The hurt you cause in the forenoon self-propelied
Will overtake you in the afternoon.
Meaning:
If a man inflicts sorrow upon others in the morning, sorrow will come upon him in the evening, unsought.
குறள் 328
நன்றாகும் ஆக்கம் பெரிதெனினும் சான்றோர்க்குக்
கொன்றாகும் ஆக்கங் கடை.
Stanza 328
However great its gains, the wise despise
The profits of slaughter.
Meaning:
The advantage which might flow from destroying life is dishonourable to the wise, even although it should be said to be great and good.
குறள் 329
கொலைவினைய ராகிய மாக்கள் புலைவினையர்
புன்மை தெரிவா ரகத்து.
Stanza 329
Professional killers are pariahs
To the discerning.
Meaning:
Men who destroy life are base men, in the estimation of those who know the nature of meanness.
குறள்320
நோயெல்லாம் நோய்செய்தார் மேலவாம் நோய்செய்யார்
நோயின்மை வேண்டு பவர்.
Stanza 320
Hurt comes to the hurtful; hence it is
That those don’t hurt who do not want to be hurt.
Meaning:
Every sorrow will come upon those who give pain to others; therefore those, who desire to be free from sorrow, give no pain to others.
குறள் 330
உயிர் உடம்பின் நீக்கியார் என்ப செயிர் உடம்பின்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்.
Stanza 330
A diseased, poor and low life, they say,
Comes of killing in the past.
